it's been a while since i posted a fanart here...i was anxious and stressed about many things, among them are my skill in drawing and talking to people. i have issues, i know :( but i practiced a lot while im gone! anyway, i wanted to document the process of doing this fanart for the first time, so here it goes!

    1 the reference

i chose this because this is one of my favorite photos of iu smiling during her concert taken by one of her fansites.

    2 drawing a rough outline

just the basic shapes of the figure. No need for complex shapes or lines. Making a few grids would also help if you have problem with proportions. then lower opacity, add a few more details with a darker ink. take a look at the reference, draw the most obvious lines you can see: the shape of the face, the hair, the shoulders, hands, mic, legs.

    3 finalizing the outline

on top of the previous, a little detailed rough outline, take a new layer and draw with a black ink (or any color you prefer, as long as it's easily seen). trace the previous rough outline you made, tweak a few details if necessary. observe the highlights and shadows of the figure from the reference. by eye, identify the shapes of the highlights and shadows and draw them accordingly. to avoid making the drawing look messy, use hatching (for light shadows) or crosshatching (for darker ones) per shape.

on the lower left is the drafted outline, on the lower right, the final outline. to achieve the effect seen on the final outline, the drafted outline was colored to shades of red, taking note that the brightest hue is where the skin should be. then i duplicated this (with a lower opacity) and moved the duplicate layer a little to the right.

    4 coloring

deciding the color palette is the most important thing when coloring. choosing the colors for the highlight (h), the base (b), and the shadows (s) determine whether the illustration would look lively, dark, sullen, or without life. as for the skin, i go between red and orange more often but slightly on the lighter side for the base. then i take the highlight between orange and yellow, choosing a value close to white. for the shadows, i go for red on the color wheel, and choose a darker value a little less towards saturation colors.

the same principle for other elements like the pants. highlight is taken from a lighter value between pink and dark blue. base is taken in the same manner, except a little towards dark blue. and lastly, the shadow is taken on the blue side of the color wheel, choosing a dark value.

for coloring, take the base color (b) first and use it to color each of the elements. then add the shadows (s) with a blending brush, then the highlights (h).

    5 final

add a background. for this illustration, since i used less saturated colors for jieun, i chose a strong pink value to make it look alive and left it plain to make jieun stand out more <3

    BONUS

edited a few details for aesthetics ㅋㅋ
